'Late Night' Producer Offers Inside Look into Letterman & Leno's Super Bowl Spot

The executive producer of the "Late Show with David Letterman" opens up about how Jay Leno and Letterman managed to star in the same Super Bowl commercial and what they're exchange was like while filming the spot. Rob Burnett tells the New York Times that the idea to film a Super Bowl party with Oprah Winfrey sitting between the late night rivals was Letterman's idea. The commercial was to promote the "Late Show with David Letterman," airing weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS. “Dave wrote the bit himself,” Burnett disclosed. “He just thought: it’s the Super Bowl, you’re supposed to entertain people.” The commercial was shot on Tuesday night at the Ed Sullivan Theater and according to the Times, both Winfrey and Leno were kept in secret green rooms until Letterman was done filming the "Late Show." They were then escorted to a living room set and Letterman arrived a little later. Burnett refers to Leno and Letterman's greetings as "very friendly, very professional, totally cordial." He continued, "You could tell these were two guys who have known each other for a long time." Burnett said the taping took only about half an hour and he said Letterman thanked his guests warmly. “This wasn’t done to help Dave or to help Jay,” Mr. Burnett said, “though I think it does help both of them. It was just done because Dave thought it would be funny and would entertain people. Nothing went beyond that.”[Read full story on The Insider]
